WEINGUT PLEITZ - ROTENFELSER HOF
Pleitz has a wide selection of fresh, crisp young wines (predominantly Rieslings, with a few Kerners and other varieties) with delicately perfumed bouquets and excellent acid/sugar balance, and also a good range of mature wines. A few years ago he also started making red and pink wines from Spätburgunder and Portugieser (we still have a few bottles of his dry pink Auslese and other mature dry red and pink wines). About 12 years ago he made his own Sekt (Germany's answer to Champagne) for the first time; many German winegrowers sell a sparkling wine which, although it appears under their own label, is in fact mass-produced elsewhere. Pleitz didn't like that idea, preferring to do his own, and to do the job properly, converting part of his cellar for the purpose; he made a single vineyard (Traisener Kickelskopf, a good Einzellage), single varietal (100% Riesling), vintage-dated, "Methode Champenoise" (though we are no longer allowed to call it that), with the bottles all laboriously turned by hand. Not cheap, and in strictly limited supply, but a stunner - it won the only Gold Medal in the area that year. Berthold himself has recently partially retired, and son Hermann is now at the helm of this rapidly expanding business.
