HESSISCHE BERGSTRASSE
Vinously speaking, this is one of Germany's best-kept secrets. It is by far the tiniest of the wine-producing regions (Anbaugebiete), having only 0.35% of Germany's total vineyard area; it doesn't normally "export" to the rest of Germany, let alone abroad. It is located on a narrow north/south strip along the main Darmstadt-Heidelberg road, a few miles east of the Rhein. Scenically it is like the "Garden of England" (Kent) in blossom-time, with acres of orchards and other fruit and berry crops - not unlike Oregon in the Pacific Northwest USA. Virtually all of its wine is consumed locally (much of it by day-trippers from places like Frankfurt and Heidelberg).
The vast majority of this region's wine is produced and marketed by the central growers' co-operative in the picturesque old town of Heppenheim, with an amazingly unforgettable name:
Bergsträsser Gebietswinzergenossenschaft
(aren't you glad you got this far? - We'll call it BGW for short!).
They have an extensive range of wines to suit almost every taste and pocket; all their Auslese wines are filled in 0.5-litre bottles - a great idea, very useful for "sipping" wines such as these - and they have a large selection of higher quality wines (Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese and Eiswein), all in half-bottles (0.375 litre).
